Why am I doing this?

I started working as an Engineering Manager back in 2020. I didn’t have any role model or more senior manager to cling to, so -as weird as it may seem- other people’s blogs and tweets where the only example I got. Eventually, I started tweeting about it myself; sometimes to vent, sometimes to ask questions, sometimes to record my epiphanies.

And tweeting is indeed a great way to compulsively post my ideas, rants and realisations, but it feels volatile and sometimes too cursory.

This log is an attempt to persist my thoughts as I grow in my management career, and to verbosely reflect about self-awareness, big wins, embarrassing mistakes and all the filler work that happens in between.

Who is this for

I feel my experience will translate pretty well to those other managers working in engineering. It may also be worth it if you are someone trying to lead without authority since moving people from A to B is one of my main themes.

I hope this can also be a window into managementland for those who are wondering what the gig is actually about and if it’s for them, and even more, for folks who can’t quite picture what their manager is doing all day -or why do we need managers for, period.
